Flowing like a lifeline through the vast deserts of Egypt, the River Nile has shaped civilisations, carried pharaohs and explorers, and sustained life along its fertile banks for thousands of years. Ancient temples rise from the landscape, fishermen cast their nets from small wooden boats, farmers tend fields of sugarcane and date palms, and villages seem to move to a rhythm dictated by the river itself. This is the Nile beyond the monuments: a living landscape where past and present continue to exist side by side.

On this intimate photographic journey, we will travel slowly along the Nile aboard a traditional dahabieh sailing boat, allowing the river to set our pace. We will step ashore in small villages, meet the people whose lives remain closely connected to the water, wander through ancient temples and archaeological sites, and photograph everyday life unfolding along the riverbanks.

More than a journey through Ancient Egypt, this will be an exploration of the Nile as it exists today, its people, traditions and stories, and the timeless relationship between a river and those who call its banks home.

After my first-ever expedition to the river Nile in 2024, I left mesmerized and deeply inspired. I discovered a place that’s so much more than just a river. I found a thread that stitches past to present, myths to reality and people to place. Egypt’s lifeline that connects ancient civilization with the increasing complications of modern life.

I decided that one day, when the time would be right, I would build an expedition here to allow an intimate group of guests to join me on a journey to discover the true spirit of this spiritual body of water.

And that moment has come. After almost a year of building, I finally found the right ship, the right partner, and the right set-up to make this dream a reality.

On board a privately chartered Egyptian sailing boat also known as ‘dahabieh’ we will travel from Luxor to Aswan, on a slow and intimate pace, meeting the people that live on the banks of this ancient river, learning about their lives, culture and traditions and documenting it all with the incredible medium that is photography.

There is a particular magic in travelling this way. Without the schedules, crowds and fixed itineraries of a conventional Nile cruise, we are free to slow everything down. To sail when the wind allows it. To linger somewhere because the light is beautiful. To step ashore when something catches our attention. To spend an afternoon in a village rather than simply passing it from the deck.

And that freedom is exactly what makes this such an exciting photographic journey.

We will move through a landscape of agricultural villages, fishermen, farmers, boatmen and families whose lives remain deeply connected to the river. We may encounter children swimming from its banks, men tending fields beneath date palms, fishermen returning with the morning catch or farmers moving between small plots of land much as generations before them have done.

We will have exclusive and privileged access to elements of the Egyptian culture that are usually off-guard for tourists, through a team of guides that are deeply immersed into the communities we will visit.

Because my expeditions are an extension of what I value in my work as an artist and story-teller, I carefully select the partners I work with, based on a few core variables. Next to the photographic potential, I am always looking for a unique and distinct hospitality angle. Hotels and camps that allows my guests to connect with the spirit of a place in a meaningful way without making compromises to comfort, as well as allowing them to experience the nostalgic charm of the olden days. This expedition is no exception to that, staying in some of Egypt’s most charming and unique hotels, with the absolute highlight our privately charted sail ship.

Day-to-day itinerary

For a period of 10 days, we will follow the pace of the Nile in between Luxor and Aswan, under the guidance of some of Egypt’s best guides.

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

After everybody arrived at Cairo International Airport, we will gather on January 11 in Villa Belle Epoque, one of Cairo’s most charming and nostalgic hotels. Built in the 1920s, the hotel’s design has been refurbished to reflect its historic origins, showcasing bright interiors and beautiful Egyptian art. Pie will welcome everyone with a beautiful dinner in the garden.

Day 2: Tapestries & Pyramids

Today we will dive into Egypt’s history. And what better way than to move around in some iconic vintage Mercedes 200 cars, crafted in the pivotal years of 1967-1968 and that became so integral to Egypt’s history. It will feel like traveling back in time.

We kick off with a visit to one of Pie’s favorite places in the country, The Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center, founded by the Cairo-born artist and architect Ramses Wissa Wassef (1911-1974). The center dedicated to the traditional craft of Egyptian tapestry weaving and provides a creative space where women are encouraged to express their artistic vision freely - from designing woven patterns to selecting their own color palettes. We will sit down with some of the women, listen to their stories, and learn about their beautiful craft.

Then we continue the day towards Giza, just outside of the city, where Egypt’s Great Pyramids are located. But don’t you worry, we won’t be queuing with the rest of the crowds. Pie and his guiding team will show you some special angles to the pyramids, again from the back seat of your Mercedes 200. A truly unique experience.

We will visit the Great Pyramid of Khufu, as well as his successors, Khafre and Menkaure. And of course, also have a peak at the amazing Sphinx. And as a cherry on the cake, we will visit the newly inaugurated Grand Egyptian Museum. This brand-new architectural landmark - the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation - presents Egypt’s heritage through state of the art design and immersive storytelling. Its 100,000 piece collection spans more than seven millennia, with the complete Tutankhamun assemblage as its dazzling centrepiece.

Towards the end of the day, we get transferred to Cairo’s Train Station, to get on board our first-class cabins on the night train to Luxor. Departure is at 9.10pm.

Day 3: A sensory journey back into time

We will wake up on the train when it slowly rolls in Luxor at 7.50am. This morning feels like waking into another Egypt, as the first golden light spills across the Nile, palm groves and dusty villages outside the window. After the noise and intensity of the capital, there is something almost dreamlike about stepping onto the platform in the soft morning air, with ancient Thebes waiting just beyond the city.

A transfer is waiting for us at the train station, driving us to our hotel for the next 2 nights, one of the most impressive hotels Pie ever stayed at, Al Moudira.

Far away from the hustle and bustle of Luxor, this hotel on the Nile’s West Bank is a journey back in time. Tucked away in rural farmland, Al Moudira is ideally located close to the iconic Valley of the Kings and Theban Mountains. The entire hotel is decorated with antique furniture picked up in Middle Eastern souqs and represents a theme inspired by Egyptian history and mythology.

After a beautiful lunch, we will engage in an afternoon of learning about Egyptian food on a sensory journey in the essence of Egyptian cooking. Each dish tells the story of the people and the ancient civilisation that mastered the art of combining local flavours with influences from cultures along the Nile. While the sun sets over the hotel, we will prepare dinner together under the guidance of a professional chef.

Day 4: In the Footsteps of the Pharaohs

Today is all about exploring the ancient city of Thebes, the city that is now called Luxor, but back in the day was the glorious capital of the New Kingdom (circa 1500 to 1000 BC).

Again, we will do it in a truly unique manner, as Pie has arranged access to a private collection of vintage cars, including some iconic stretch Mercedes 200 from the 1960s, two Robust Land Rover Defenders from the 1980s, and a timeless Karmann Ghia, a masterpiece from the 1960s.

All day we will have access to these beautiful vintage cars which we will use to explore Medinet Habu to indulge in Ancient Egypt’s archaeological history on various private visits of the mortuary temple of Ramesses III as well as a series of other temples in the Valley of the Kings, and the Valley of the Queens. Lunch we will have at the iconic Marsam restaurant, one of the oldest hotels on Luxor’s West Bank.

We will end the day back at Al Moudira to have a beautiful nature-to-table dinner at the Farm Kitchen, led by Gioconda Scott. Her menus shift with the seasons, using produce grown on their own twelve hectares of farmland and ingredients sourced from neighbouring Nile-side farms.

Day 5: On-board of our ship!

Today is a big day, as we are boarding our new home. The next 5 days will be spent on board of a privately chartered Dahabieh, a traditional Egyptian sailing ship, which allows us to set sail from Luxor to Aswan. We have the ship all to ourselves, no other people around, making this a truly unique and intimate way of exploring the banks of one of the world’s oldest rivers.

Very few of these flat-bottomed sailing vessels, with their two masts and two lateen sails at both the bow and the stern, remain today. Our dahabieh has just 8 air-conditioned cabins and a big sundeck. Each cabin is equipped with a private bathroom, hot water and a toilet, and our Egyptian captain and his entire crew will guide us through one of the most incredible journeys of your life.

A local Egyptian chef will serve us incredible meals 3 times a day, and Pie’s personal guiding team of 3 amazing guides will lead us on every activity when off-boarding the ship. This allows us to cut our expedition group in 3 smaller sub-groups to allow for intentional and meaningful interaction with the communities and people we visit along the banks of the River. A way of operating that became a signature style on Pie’s expeditions.

Each morning, we start our day on the deck, sipping strong Egyptian coffee at the break of dawn, while chatting to our captain. Palm trees drift past in a blur of green, and veils of hazy smoke drift across the water. On the banks people are burning wood, and morning prayers echo in the distance. Children splash in the shallows, fishermen cast their nets.

On this first day we will visit the city of Esna to see its temple, dedicated to Khnum, God of fertility and the source of the Nile. We will continue exploring the little houses and crafts of the village and have lunch at the Okra association, led by the women of the community, to taste Esna’s best food. At the end of the day, we set sail towards El Kab for an overnight stay.

Day 6: Tombs, temples and life along the Nile

After breakfast we will visit El Kab to explore the rock-cut tombs carved into the mountainside, to return to the ship a few hours later and set sail to Edfu, where we will visit one of the largest and best-preserved temples in Egypt, thanks to the sand that covered it until the 19th century. We will witness life unfold on the banks of the Nile from morning till evening, when we continue sailing to Ramadi.

Day 7: Village life & ancient sanctuaries

We will wake up with a stroll through the peaceful village of Ramadi, set amid a picturesque landscape of alfalfa fields, sugar cane plantations, and date palms, where you can observe the local people tending and cultivating the land.

After the morning, we continue sailing, under full sail if weather conditions permit, to the site of Gebel el-Silsila. On the western bank of the Nile stands a speos (a rock-cut sanctuary) dedicated to Horemheb and seven other deities. We then continue sailing to Beshir and if conditions allow, enjoy an open-air dinner, followed by Nubian coffee served beneath a khaima, the traditional tent of the desert nomads.

Day 8: The camel market of Daraw

In the morning we set sail to the Temple of Kom Ombo, whose romantic setting on a promontory overlooking the Nile is truly breathtaking. Afterwards, travel by road to Daraw, home to Egypt’s largest livestock market, held every Tuesday morning. This vibrant traditional market offers an unforgettable spectacle, the colors and aromas of the Orient blend together as camels bustle through the crowds and traders loudly negotiate the prices of livestock. It is a truly authentic and immersive experience.

We teturn to the ship for a late lunch while sailing and if weather conditions permit, enjoy cruising under full sail. Upon arrival at Al Kobaneyah, there is an opportunity to take a refreshing swim in the Nile and enjoy some fishing.

Day 9: Disembarking our ship

We start the day with a final morning cruise to Aswan. After breakfast, the cruise comes to an end with disembarkation at around 8:30 a.m., followed by a visit to the Temple of Philae, one of Pie’s favorite sights on his previous journeys. Located about 5 km south of Aswan, Agilkia Island has been home to the Temple of Philae since its relocation following the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Dedicated to Isis, the universal mother and wife of Osiris, the temple is considered one of Egypt’s most beautiful sanctuaries, renowned for its exquisite bas-reliefs, colorful frescoes, and elegant column capitals.

After our visit to Philae we will continue a transfer to our Aswan hotel.

Day 10: Where the Nile meets Africa

We have arrived in our final destination, the city of Aswan, the southernmost city in Egypt, located on the first cataract of the Nile. The river, until now calm and straight, gives way to a chaotic universe of swirling waves from here, tawny sand and the charred rocks of the Libyan cliff, which stands on the western bank. Here the Nile flows into Africa.

We will stay at a very traditional local Nubian hotel, half an hour south of Aswan. A collection of mud houses with brightly coloured domed roofs: Anakato Kiki’s Nubian Houses.

A few years ago, a Nubian family chose this wild shore at the foot of the sparkling sand dunes and built the rooms in the style of their ancestors, whose villages had been lost to Lake Nasser’s flooding. It’s a truly authentic way to end our journey. Dinnner will be served on the small beach area at the front of the property, and guests can enjoy relaxing mud and sand therapies or traditional Egyptian performances.

Day 11: Bid farewell to the Nile

In the morning we get transferred to Aswan Airport to board our flight back to Cairo, which is where we say a final goodbye and everyone continues their onward international journey home.

NOTE: This journey is an ‘expedition’, so above itinerary is the plan. The actual journey may change depending on the weather, the road conditions, or other events beyond our control. Or simply if new exciting opportunities present themselves. But don’t worry, Pie and his guiding team will do everything to ensure you will get the best possible experience.

Domestic flight tickets between Aswan and Cairo have intentionally been excluded to allow for optimal connections on your way home. Pie’s team will assist and advise with booking your domestic tickets so thay they seemlessly connect with your international flights out of the country. Costs would be around EUR 250-300 per person for a domestic one-way flight from Aswan to Cairo

This can be arranged after booking your expedition seat.

Do I need any photography experience?

Nope, not at all. Everybody is welcome. Beginners and professionals. Young and old. In fact, a diverse group always makes up for a lot of fun, because the main idea of my expeditions is all about interaction and learning from each other. I’m more than happy to explain you the basics of how to use your camera, but we can also have a deeper conversation about how to grow your personal brand as a visual artist, or how to find your voice. Or about music. art or sports :) So please don’t hesitate if you have never used a camera before, I’m there to help. But also don’t hesitate if you want to fine-tune your professional skills, I’m sure I can help with that too.

What type of gear do I need?

As soon as you have confirmed your booking, we will share an extensive list of recommended gear items that you would need for this expedition. However, don’t stress, any camera will work, it all depends on how you use it. We offer a custom advice for every level, from amateurs and beginners to full professional photographers.

Why do we travel in January?

January is one of the most pleasant months to travel along the Nile. The intense heat of the Egyptian summer has disappeared, leaving clear skies, mild daytime temperatures and cool mornings and evenings, ideal conditions for exploring temples, villages and archaeological sites without the oppressive heat. It is also a beautiful time to experience the river itself. Days are often bright and crisp, the light is soft and golden for photography, and long hours can be spent comfortably on deck as the dahabieh slowly sails between palm groves, farmland and desert landscapes. January allows us to experience the Nile at a slower rhythm, with the climate very much on our side.

No. On this expedition there’s no single supplement. All rooms are based on twin sharing unless you book as a couple, we will of course offer you double sharing. As soon as the group is complete, we will make a roomplan taking into account personal preferences.

My name is Pie Aerts and I’m a photographer. My work examines and questions the intricate and often melancholic relationship between people and place in an attempt to explore why we seem increasingly disconnected from each other, ourselves, and our natural environment. By a research-led exploration of stereotypes, I’m hoping to offer nuanced and personal perspectives on culture, tradition and human relationships. In doing so, I’m consistently prioritizing hope over despair, and coexistence over conflict.

I firmly believe that art has the power to console, heal, and restore our lost connections. Putting this belief into practice, I founded Prints for Wildlife, a fundraising platform that unites over 375 photographers from around the world to sell art in support of conservation. Since its inception in 2020, the platform has generated $2.5 million, donated to African Parks Network and Conservation International.
